Word-of-mouth referrals are still hugely important for tradespeople. A recent study found that a recommendation to family or friends is the single most important reason for hiring and selecting a tradesperson in 2023 – above online reviews and cost.
So despite the growth of search engines and online platforms, we know that word-of-mouth remains a vital tool in connecting good tradespeople with customers.
That’s why we want to harness the power of recommendation to spread the word about women in trades.
There are serious gender inequalities in the trade industries.
Construction apprenticeships – which often lead to careers in plumbing or carpentry – are 95% male-dominated, while young women are far more likely to pursue training in areas like childcare or hair and beauty. Since these are much lower paid than skilled manual trades, women can miss out on some £600,000 of lifetime earnings compared to a typical male apprentice.
And those women that do make a career in trade are often underpaid. A 2022 study by Rated People found that tradeswomen earn on average just 72% of what their male counterparts earn across all trades. One report found that on average, male electricians earn £26.51 an hour whereas female electricians earn £18.54 an hour, a difference of £7.97.
At TaskHer, we want to fix the trades industry, making sure women have equal opportunities and fair pay.
And you can help.
If you’ve had a great service from a TaskHer tradeswoman, why not tell your family, friends and colleagues?
Simply spreading the word can have a dramatic ‘ripple effect’, helping to normalise the idea of women in trade.
And there’s still a long way to go on that. Gendered language is entrenched in our culture: some 80% of UK residents still use the term ‘tradesmen’ to refer to all people in the trade industry. That’s another barrier to girls considering trade as a career.
We think we can fix that together.
That’s why we’ve introduced the TaskHer Fix Up a Friend programme. We’re empowering our loyal customers to spread the word about how brilliant our tradeswomen are – as well as helping their friends and getting some savings themselves.
Here's how it works:
1. When you book a job through TaskHer, we’ll send you your unique referral link to share with your friends.
2. You recommend TaskHer to your friends and send them your link to book.
3. When they book their first job on our site using your referral link they’ll get £15 off.
4. Each time a friend books using your link you’ll get £15 credit that you can use to reduce the cost of your next TaskHer job - you’ll see all your credits on your TaskHer dashboard.
5. By spreading the word about TaskHer and encouraging people to use our service you will have helped make the world a fairer place for tradeswomen.
It’s a win-win-win!
