The 2008 financial crisis was the push that Pamella needed to pursue a career as a heating and gas engineer.

Moving from Jamaica to the UK marked a significant turning point in my life. Settling into a new country brought its own set of challenges, and then the 2008 recession hit.
Before I became a Gas and Heating Engineer, I taught Science. I was inspired to pursue a career in the trades by the strong women in my family, particularly my mother and grandmother. They emphasised the importance of having practical skills alongside a career, and I remembered their wise words whenever a household repair cropped up.
Even just the thought of doing repairs myself was daunting. I thought everything would explode when I looked at it; I was even scared to hoover too close to the radiators! After a bit, I thought, this is ridiculous, I need to change this.
I undertook a three-year blended course at Train 4 Trades in Wolverhampton which involved completing theoretical work at home and practical work at college. I also went through Access Training UK to complete a specialist course on gas boilers.
The college was supportive, warm, and welcoming. Although the institution itself provided a good level of support, the dynamics among my peers were a bit more complicated.
Once, we had an assessment that involved bending steel pipes. We had to share one machine, which was frustrating. Every time I pulled a bend on the machine and moved on to the next activity, I returned to find that my bend had disappeared. My peers had stolen it.
It was frustrating, but I persevered and prevailed.
Now, I’m not just a tradesperson, I’m also an advocate. I hold the positions of Ambassador of Sustainability and Ambassador for Women in Construction from the London Build. As part of my commitment, I am dedicated to eco-friendly practices and empowering women in this traditionally male-dominated field.
Without a doubt, the most rewarding part of my job is seeing my customers visibly satisfied. When I solve a problem and provide customers with peace of mind, I know I’m doing something right. It’s nice to make a tangible difference, and I always strive to create relationships based on trust.
Trust opens the door for deeper interactions, allowing me to advise customers on ways to improve their systems, both financially and environmentally. Ultimately, I like to blend technical expertise with a personalised service.
One of the most challenging parts of the job is dealing with customers who don’t value hard work. It’s rare, but it happens. It’s difficult to strike a balance between firmness and professionalism, but it must be done.
In my spare time, I immerse myself in the world of interior design. It’s a creative outlet that complements my career.
By blending my professional expertise with my passion for design, I offer a unique level of insight to my customers. When I build a level of trust with a client, I love advising them on the aesthetic aspects of their interior. With qualifications in interior design, gas boilers, heating, air source heat pumps, and plumbing, I provide a comprehensive design and installation service which I would say is very unique!
I start each day bright and early. My morning routine sets the tone, so it’s important to be regimented. Each day revolves around a meticulously planned schedule. On an average day, I might respond to new calls, manage my staff, and write quotes.
I consciously strive to take my breaks, but it can be difficult when I’m immersed in my work. My husband is incredibly supportive, and he encourages me to take care of myself.
I’m driven by a clear set of goals. The prospect of growing my business and expanding my reach is deeply motivating. On top of that, I want to serve as a beacon of encouragement for other women who want to pursue a career in the trades.
With determination, women can break barriers in the trade industry. Each day offers a new opportunity to lead by example, challenge outdated norms, and contribute positively to the evolving landscape of the trade industry.
