Knowing what type of skilled tradesperson you need for specific jobs can save you:
a) money
b) time
c) face
It’s not always obvious and sometimes common sense isn’t enough to get you through. So here’s a handy list to help cover some of the more common confusions we see at TaskHer to help you when you next need it.
A plumber
A washing machine or dishwasher engineer
Engineers will have specialised knowledge, diagnostic tools and manufacturer training which will enable them to get your machine working.
They will also be more likely have access to specific parts and components meaning things will be working faster.
The caveat here is that if the problem is external to the machine (the plumbing) then yes, you’ll need a plumber.
Finally, these machines are mixing water and electricity so you want someone who is very experienced in messing around with them.
A plumber
A plumber and an electrician
Electric showers require a dedicated electrical circuit and wiring to power the heating element and control unit safely. You’ll need a Part P registered electrician to do this part of the job before bringing in a plumber to install the water connections and plumbing.
Again - and we can’t hammer this home enough - you want experienced people when playing with water and electricity.
As a side note, if you’re simply changing out an existing electric shower a plumber should be able to connect the existing wiring without needing to bring in an electrician.
A plumber
A drainage specialist
While plumbers handle a wide range of plumbing issues, including some blocked drains, there are a lot of scenarios where a drainage expert is necessary.
Drainage experts have a range of tools, cameras and high pressure jetting machines that will diagnose (and remedy) issues that a plumber would not be able to get to the bottom of.
Drainage experts are trained to diagnose a wide range of drainage problems, from simple blockages to more complex issues such as pipe corrosion, structural damage and interference from things like tree roots.
An electrician
A heating engineer or electrician
Both heating and gas engineers and electricians are able to install smart home thermostats to a combi boiler. If you want to wall mount the monitor of the thermostat you’ll need an electrician to do this if you don’t have a power source.
A heating engineer
A heating engineer or plumber
Both plumbers and heating engineers are qualified to work with radiators. If you go for a plumber over a heating engineer ensure they are NVQ Level 2 and 3 qualified.
All heating and gas engineers should be registered on the Gas Safe website. TaskHer checks all of these qualifications before working with all our tradeswomen.
